Standard Variable Rate Loans

Standard Variable Rate loans typically offer maximum flexibility and great features, including the option to make additional repayments when you choose to, and redraw when you need to. Variable rate home loans are subject to interest rate movements. They can change when the lender chooses to increase or decrease the rate, generally in line with the Reserve Bank of Australia's cash rate.

Advantages

  • Very flexible and allow you to make extra repayments with no penalty
  • If interest rates go down your repayments will be less
  • Minimal break fees if you pay off the loan early
  • May offer an offset facility (depending on the lender) with redraw available

Disadvantages

  • If interest rates go up your repayments will be higher
  • Not all variable loans are the same so be wary of the fine print
  • There is usually an annual or monthly administration fee charged
